Baby’s Death Leads to Capital Murder Charge in Leake

A Leake County man has been arrested after a baby died of suspected child abuse.  Sheriff Randy Atkinson says they got a phone call on June 18th claiming the 3-month boy had been injured accidentally…

“The call came in as a child having fallen off a bed and was not breathing.”

The baby was taken to a Carthage hospital then rushed to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where the little boy died last Sunday.  The sheriff says a doctor notified him that there were indications that the child had been abused, triggering an investigation that’s ongoing…

“We have done a search warrant on the residence and we have now interviewed the suspect and charged him with capital murder.”

The man is identified as  Robert Tanner Pigg, 32,…

“I don’t know the relationship of him and the child.  I just know he was living with the mother of the child.”

Atkinson says the exact cause of death is still under investigation…

“There is an autopsy being done on the victim.”

The sheriff says it’s been a tough case to handle…
