Kosciusko Football: The Road to the Championship
Relive the excitement, history, and community support leading up to Kosciusko High School’s first state football championship game since 1996. From throwback yearbook photos and shoutouts from past players and coaches to audio from today’s team as kids, this multimedia story celebrates the legacy, pride, and voices of Whippet Nation.
“Can You Name These Whippets?” — A Look Back Before the Big Game

As the Kosciusko Whippets get set to play for a football state championship for the first time since 1996, we’re taking a fun trip down memory lane.
Back in ’96, many of this year’s Whippet players were still decades away from being born — but their parents were walking the same halls, sitting in the same classrooms, and cheering in the same stands. Some of them were even suiting up in maroon and white themselves.
So we dug into the old yearbooks… and we found some gems.
We’ve gathered throwback photos of Whippet parents from the 1996 era, along with some classic shots of this year’s coaching staff, back when they were the age of the players they’re coaching now. (A special thanks to the coaches’ wives for helping us find a few of these.)
And just for fun, our very own Voice of the Whippets Breck Riley, straight out of 4th grade, during that 1996 Whippet season.
But here’s the twist: We’re not telling you who’s who.
Scroll through the gallery below and see how many you can recognize. Can you spot a familiar face? A teammate’s parent? A coach you’ve known for years? Maybe even your own old classmates?
It’s all part of celebrating this historic week for Whippet football and the community that’s been behind them every step of the way.
Take a look, make your guesses, and share it with your friends — let’s see who can name the most “mystery Whippets.”
And tune in the Prairie Farms Pregame Show Friday at 3:00 pm on Breezy 103 to hear shoutouts from several former Whippets ahead of the 4A Championship Game against Columbia.

Whippets get shoutouts ahead of championship game

Whippet Nation has been buzzing all week, and the shoutouts have been rolling in nonstop.
Former players, legendary coaches, community members, and even the children of our current coaching staff have all shared messages of support as Kosciusko heads back to the State Championship for the first time since 1996.
We’ve pulled all of those voices together into a few audio files—stories, encouragement, memories, and plenty of Whippet spirit—to help get you hyped for kickoff.
Hit play on the audio file below and enjoy the love from across Whippet Nation and see videos of shoutouts from the children of the KHS coaching staff and the community pep rally.
Go Whippets!
Audio: Before They Were Whippets… They Were Champions

Long before suiting up for a shot at the MHSAA State Championship, several of today’s Whippets were already making noise on the football field. Back in November 2015, they brought home a title as members of the Kosciusko Cardinals in the Youth Gridiron League — a “Super Bowl” win that many in Whippet Nation still remember.
We dug into the archives and found audio from those young players celebrating their championship moment with on the morning show with our own Breck Riley.
Now, on the day they take the field for the biggest game of their high school careers, it feels like the perfect time to look back.
Hit play and hear the voices of future Whippets… back when their football journeys were just getting started.
Once a champion, always a champion. Go Whippets! 🏈🐾
