Residents can expect temporary street closures in Kosciusko later this month as the city prepares for two major community events, including the opening of the LV Hull Museum and the America 250 celebration.
During Tuesday night’s meeting of the Kosciusko Board of Aldermen, officials approved requests to close streets for both events.
The first closure will be for the opening of Phase One of the LV Hull Museum on Saturday, June 13. Mayor Tim Kyle said Allen Street will be closed from Huntington Street to the next block to accommodate activities surrounding the opening.
The museum and Hull’s home are expected to be open to visitors during the event.
Additional activities will begin the evening before with a screening of the documentary Love is a Sensation at 6 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Skipworth Performing Arts Center. The film was created by filmmaker Yafit Smith, who developed a friendship with Hull while visiting family in Kosciusko.
Later in the month, several downtown streets will close for Kosciusko-Attala Partnership’s America 250 celebration scheduled for Saturday, June 27.
According to Kyle, portions of Monroe Street, Natchez Street, Jefferson Street and streets near Renaissance Bank and Central Office Supply will be closed for the event.
The celebration will feature children’s activities, food vendors, entertainment, historical reenactors, tours of local landmarks, and a pet parade. Fireworks originally postponed during the Natchez Trace Festival are also scheduled to be part of the festivities.
Kyle said the event will serve as the community’s culmination of its America 250 activities, which have included a month-long lecture series highlighting local, state and national history.
