The City of Kosciusko is pursuing another potential funding source to help address aging sewer infrastructure throughout the community.
During Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting, officials approved a resolution allowing the city to apply for grant funding through the Delta Regional Authority.
Mayor Tim Kyle said he was recently contacted by staff from the office of U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith regarding infrastructure funding opportunities available through the program.
According to Kyle, the grant can only be used for infrastructure projects such as water and sewer improvements.
The city is currently preparing to begin a sewer relining project and officials believe additional funding could help extend those efforts.
“We talk about this all the time. You never get through with sewer,” Kyle said. “It’s always a constant battle.”
City leaders have emphasized the importance of reducing infiltration into sewer lines, which can overload the system and increase operational costs.
One advantage of the grant program is that it does not require a local funding match.
Approval of the resolution allows the city to submit an application for consideration, although funding is not guaranteed.
“You don’t get anything unless you ask,” Kyle said.
