A cadet from the Kosciusko Fire Department is among the newest class of firefighters completing an intensive state training program at the Mississippi State Fire Academy in Jackson.
Kris Mosley, representing the Kosciusko Fire Department, is a member of Firefighter Class 221, which will graduate 27 students from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1010 Firefighter I-II certification course during a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the academy’s auditorium in Jackson. The graduation is open to the public.
The seven-week program is designed to prepare recruits for the realities of modern firefighting through a combination of online instruction, classroom learning, and hands-on training. Cadets in the course are trained in fire behavior, suppression tactics, rescue operations, incident command systems, hazardous materials response, and other critical emergency response skills.
The curriculum meets and exceeds standards set by the National Fire Protection Association as well as Mississippi’s minimum firefighter training requirements under state law.
Officials with the Mississippi State Fire Academy, a division of the Mississippi Insurance Department, say the graduating class represents a significant investment in local and regional public safety.
State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney, who oversees the Mississippi Insurance Department, and Academy Executive Director Kelly Elliott both emphasized the importance of the training in preparing firefighters to serve their communities effectively.
“We are confident the immediate impact and positive difference these firefighters will make, not only within their departments but also in their communities, will truly be substantial,” Elliott said.
For Kris Mosley and the other members of Class 221, the graduation marks the completion of a demanding seven-week training period and the beginning of their formal service as certified firefighters ready to respond to emergencies across Mississippi.
