For the second time this year, gas is averaging $4 a gallon across Mississippi. AAA says the statewide average price reached that mark this morning, up a penny since Thursday. While the auto club’s average hasn’t been this high since May, gas prices in many areas have been well above $4 for some time now.
In this part of central Mississippi, countywide averages range from $3.95 in Leake to $3.97 in Holmes and Montgomery, $4.05 in Neshoba and Winston, $4.07 in Choctaw, $4.09 in Attala and $4.12 in Carroll County. GasBuddy.com says the lowest price it’s found at an individual gas station in this area is $3.83 in Philadelphia. According to the phone app, the lowest price in Carthage is $3.84, it’s $3.89 in Louisville and $3.94 in Kosciusko.
Despite the increases, AAA says Mississippi’s statewide average price is the third-lowest in the nation behind only Indiana and Texas. Texas historically has had some of the lowest gas prices. Indiana’s pump prices are low because the state’s gas taxes have been suspended.
