At 5:22 Tuesday evening, the Attala County Fire Department along with Sallis and Carmack volunteers responded to a house fire on Attala Rd. 4147. When firefighters arrived, they discovered about a quarter of the house was involved.
The crews were able to make an interior attack on the blaze and quickly contained it, preventing it from destroying the entire home. The house was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
The official cause is undetermined, but it is believed to have started under the carport where the homeowner had hay stored. They believe the hay may have gone through a heat, a process where moisture and natural decomposition cause heat to build up inside the hay, causing the hay to self-ignite.
