Holmes Bulldogs Defeat Coahoma Tigers 42-23

GOODMAN — The Holmes Community College Bulldogs improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the North Division here Thursday with a 42-23 win over the Coahoma Community College Tigers.

Holmes will travel to Booneville next Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. to play Northeast. You can listen on the Bulldog Radio Network.

Coahoma scored with 12 minutes remaining in the first quarter to lead 7-0 after the extra point was good.

The Bulldogs answered right back with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Chase Richardson to Matthew Williams with 8:52 left in the first. Andrew Merrell‘s extra point was good, and the game was tied.

Holmes took the lead with 2:37 left in the first quarter when Richardson found Colton DeShazo in the corner of the endzone for the touchdown. Merrell’s kick was good, and Holmes led 14-7.

The Bulldogs weren’t through in the first as Richardson found Malcolm Boykin on an 18-yard touchdown pass. The extra point failed, and Holmes led 20-7 with 1:01 left in the first.

Coahoma hit a field goal early in the second quarter to make it 20-10.

Merrell added a 24-yard field goal of his own with 9:31 left in the second to make it 23-10.

The Tigers scored with 7:16 left in the second and pulled within six at 23-17.

Coahoma then scored again with 4:04 to tie the game at 23. Holmes blocked the PAT, and Christavious Savior took it back for two points to give Holmes the 25-23 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs opened the third with another Merrell field goal. This one came from 30 yards out, and Holmes led 28-23 with 2:26 left in the third.

It was all Holmes in the fourth quarter. Tavares Wade broke loose on a 19-yard run for a score. Merrell’s kick was good, and Holmes led 35-23 with 11:53 left in the game.

B.J. Johnson then hauled in a 6-yard pass from Richardson for the touchdown with 10:56 left. Merrell’s kick was good.

Unofficially, Richardson finished 26-of-50 for 362 yards and four touchdowns. Wade led with five catches for 79 yards while Johnson had five catches for 65 yards and Boykin had three catches for 55 yards.

Tavares Wade was named the Sullivan’s Drugs and Gifts player of the game.
