KOSCIUSKO, Miss.–You may have seen smoke in two different parts of Attala county Friday evening. Volunteer firefighters were fighting a fire near Sallis along Hwy. 12, when they were dispatched to another fire in the southeast part of the county on Attala Rd. 5022.
The fire on 5022 began in someone’s yard and spread into the woods at about 6 p.m.
Once firefighters got on the scene they determined they needed help from the Mississippi Forestry Commission. They have specialized equipment to help fight woods and grass fired.
It was estimated that two to three acres had been covered by the fire..
While Forestry had been called by 7 p.m. they had not arrived by 8.
Saturday morning fire in Ethel
A grass fire was reported near Ethel on Attala Rd. 5238, Saturday morning at 10:42. That was near Business 12 in Ethel.
Once a volunteer firefighter got there he reported that a controlled burn may have gotten out of hand. It was contained a short time later.
South of McCool
On Attala Rd. 5006 south of McCool, a grass fire was reported just before 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The fire was off in the woods. Forestry was called out to assist in fighting the fire with special equipment.
Another one (or two)
A grass fire was reported just before 4 p.m. on Attala Rd. 3241. That was reported back in from firefighters as a grass fire behind a structure covering about an eighth of an acre. At the same time another grass fore was reported on Attala Rd. 1106, which is south of Kosciusko near Hwy. 35. The fire was estimated to cover four to five acres. Firefighters again called out Forestry. They were quite busy and did not have an estimate as to what time they might arrive.
Another fire was reported nearby and Forestry was also needed to help fight that fire. Firefighters who spotted it surmised that it was where the larger fire originated.
Another on near McCool
Around 5 p.m. another fire was reported just north of McCool. Forestry was called to that one, as well.
Sallis Fire Rekindled
Twenty four hours after the woods fore was put out near Sallis along Hwy. 12, the fire rekindled and reached the Hwy. 12. Several volunteer fire units responded, as well as the Sheriff’s Dept. for traffic control just after 5 p.m. The fire was controlled by 6:35.
