Tax Cut Bill Passes House With Questions From Central Miss. Lawmakers

JACKSON, Miss.–The “Build Up Mississippi Act”, the legislation that would phase out the state income tax and cut the state grocery tax in half, passed the Mississippi House Thursday, by a vote of 88 to 24, with some objections from representatives from central Mississippi counties.

“I don’t think this is unique to just Holmes County, but when you look at the schools, the actual buildings across the state, it’s been told to me that the average age is about 63 years,” said Rep. Bryant Clark, a Democrat from Holmes County, indicating his concern that the legislature may be acting too hastily in cutting the taxes.

Clark also expressed concerns about how Mississippi’s state employees would be taken care of, should those sources of revenue be cut.

“The last pay increase they had, I think it was a three percent across the board,” said Clark.

For Rep. John Hines, a Democrat from Washington County, the concerns are mostly about education, especially community colleges.

“When we make cuts we cut money from education or other entities that are considered low-hanging fruit,” he said. “Some of the community colleges have received more money than others. Some of their projects have been funded where others have not.”

Rep. Trey Lamar, a Republican from Tate County and chair of the House Ways and Means Committee did not completely assuage the concerns, but rather said the funding would come from other sources, namely allowing cities and counties to impose additional sales tax. Much of the state funding for municipalities comes from the grocery tax.

House Speaker Jason White, a Republican from West, said he believes the Act will ultimately benefit quality of life for Mississippians and is not a “tax swap”.

The bill must pass the Senate and be signed by Gov. Reeves to become law.

I’m all in for reducing/eliminating the State Income Tax and Grocery Tax. But in doing so if other taxes are increased to a point above what the reduction would be. Then we the consumers will not be benefiting. What we need is a reduction that will leave us with more money for necessary living expenses.

FOR MANY YEARS REPUBLICANS CALLED DEMOCRATS, THE “TAX AND SPEND PARTY”, NOW, WE CONSERVATIVES FIND OUT THAT WE HAVE BEEN DECEIVED BY THE LEGISLATORS WE SENT TO JACKSON. *****ANY TAX INCREASE ON GAS OR FUEL, IS RIDICULOUS! NOTE THAT TAX INCREASES DO NOT HURT LEGISLATORS; THEY HAVE DAILY EXPENSE ACCOUNTS, IF THE EXPENSE ACCOUNT NEEDS RAISING, THEY, DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, VOTE TO INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF THE EXPENSE ACCOUNTS, OR THEIR PAY. VERY COVENIENT! I URGE THE LEGISLATORS TO CONTINUE TO CUT SPENDING. QUIT DONATING MONEY TO MULTI BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATIONS, QUIT GETTING PAID TO GO TO WASHINGTON DC, FOREIGN COUNTRIES AND THE MILLIONS BEING SPENT ON CAPITOL POLICE, ETC. WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, REMEMBER JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER’S ORDER HE GAVE TO HIS ACCOUNTANTS, “DON’T WORRY ABOUT MONEY COMING IN, CUT EXPENSES”. ALSO REMEMBER PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN’S MOTTO, “YOU CAN NOT TAX YOURSELF INTO PROSPERITY”! THANK YOU “BREEZY NEWS” FOR KEEPING US INFORMED. R/S, BY AN OLD REPUBLICAN, TONY L BALLARD, MP, USAR (RET)

It’s a crooked legislature and the members all answer to the heads of the wealthy and their Dixie Mafia subordinates.

Now after 4-years of Biden energy policies Mississippi has a chance to finally enjoy lower gas prices. State politicians are charged up to raise gas prices 5% per gallon almost immediately….not 5 cents. Five percent is about 15-cents per gallon if gas is $2.85/gallon so now $3 per gallon.
And they think they’ll shine because income tax will be phased out over 10-YEARS! That’s 2036! Where will you be? And it won’t help retirees one-red-cent!
Ours are still some of the highest car tags in the nation and the state gathers huge income from state lottery, the casinos, sales tax at 7% even on any online orders so with many businesses going under or leaving in the heat of COVID, and crime we just about have to order online and pay shipping too.
When will Mississippi begin living within it’s means like the rest of us do?
