Carthage Dodges Tornado Bullet

Folks in Carthage may not realize what a close call they had Sunday night.  A storm that gave every indication of being able to produce a tornado passed right over the city– without touching down.   Chad Entremont at the National Weather Service in Jackson says they had been watching the storm on radar for a while…

“As it was approaching Leake County, it started to get more organized and show signs of increasing rotation.”

The Carthage area was under a tornado warning….

“And then, as it was going through the Pearl River valley near Highway 25 and southwest of Carthage, it really started to increase its radar signature in terms of the structure looked better and the velocity that we see really started to increase.”

The Weather Service was convinced that it was about to put a tornado on the ground….

“It actually looked like things were going to come together and a tornado was going to occur, fairly quickly and close to Carthage.  It looked like a tornado was imminent.”

Entremont says it’s hard to explain why that didn’t happen….

“I think we were very fortunate in that case that, for whatever reason, that particular storm just didn’t want to produce a tornado.”
