City of Kosciusko considering making narrow street one-way

The City of Kosciusko is considering changing a portion of a narrow street to one-way.

During Tuesday night’s meeting of the board of aldermen, the board heard from Willie “Fox” Fletcher, a resident of 2nd Avenue, who expressed concern about increased traffic on the portion of the street between Hwy 35 and Hwy 43 once the new Jack’s restaurant is opened.

Fletcher said that because the street is very narrow, the increased two way traffic could be a hazard for the mostly elderly residents that live there.

Since the other portion of 2nd Avenue, from Hwy 43 to James Meredith Street is already one way going east, Fletcher asked if the board would make it the same for this section of the street.

After discussion, the board offered a proposal of making the street one way from Stewart Street to Hwy 43 (see map below), leaving the street two way from Stewart Street west to Hwy 35 north.

No action was taken as Mayor Tim Kyle said he wanted to speak with Jack’s representatives and others in the area before the board makes a decision.

I haven’t been down 2nd Ave in awhile. In the past, if I left CVS, it was sometimes easy to leave by turning into 2nd Ave instead of trying to pull out in front of traffic to cross the road. I recall that the avenue was in TERRIBLE shape paving wise. Has that been taken care of? If not, that seems as if it would be a hazard to the elderly who live there, as well as anyone who travels it. One of the houses on 2nd Avenue always has the prettiest flowers growing in the yard. I have no comment about the decision as to one way or two way otherwise.
