The City of Kosciusko is getting two new weather/tornado sirens.

Aldermen approved the sirens during Tuesday night’s board meeting, with Mayor Tim Kyle explaining that the sirens were awarded through a grant.

“This was actually a FEMA grant application, but it’s being administered through MEMA, through the state of Mississippi,” said Kyle.

The new sirens will be placed on 4th Avenue near Kosciusko Upper Elementary and on West Jefferson Street near the Attala County Maintenance barn and Aponaug Park.

“We hope with these two added sirens that everybody in the community would be able to hear a warning siren,” said Kyle. “…it’s just something that hopefully will help save lives if we ever have a tornado that is moving into our community.”

There was no timetable given for when the sirens would be received and installed.

There is no doubt that outdoor warning sirens are a blessing, especially in small-town communities like Kosciusko. Nevertheless, it’s important to know their limits. Manufacturers design these sirens for one specific purpose: to be heard effectively outdoors in multiple directions, alerting individuals outside that threatening weather is approaching and they should seek shelter. They were never designed to be heard inside our homes.

For indoor safety, residents should have access to and use other alert systems like weather radios, local media like Breezy 101, and mobile phone apps to ensure they receive severe weather warnings.

The safest approach is to be proactive and never rely solely on any single warning system. Preparation, NOAA Weather Radio, local media updates, your phone and common sense in being weather aware are all vital parts of staying safe during severe weather.

Let’s replace stop signs in town
    Let’s replace ALL street signs
Let’s clean up what was once junior high

The siren at the water tower on elm Street didn’t sound off for the last two tornado warnings, I heard the one up town at the water tower behind the old light and water building and the county fire department, I heard it during the first warning a week or so ago but the last warning I almost didn’t hear it.
