Former Attala County fire chief Roy Williams dies following car wreck

The former fire chief of the Attala County Fire Department died Tuesday due to injuries sustained in a weekend car wreck.

According to Attala County Coroner Sam Bell, Roy Williams, 65, died Tuesday at a Jackson hospital.

The wreck happened Sunday afternoon on Knox Road around 11:10 am. Williams was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital Attala before being airlifted to Jackson for more treatment.

Williams was the Attala County Fire Department’s first African American fire chief.

In total, he served the citizens of Attala County as a firemen for 32 years.

    My other brother by different mother we were certainly miss you. We were friends for 46 years from high school. Lord help us all

    My sympathies to his family and close friends. He was top notch guy, one you’d want to be around when trouble struck for sure. Always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. Great guy that will be sorely missed!!!

    Roy was much more than a Fire Chief. He had a love for his job, but mostly, a love for Attala County and all those that live in our County. Roy was both admired and respected. He will be missed. Rest easy Roy, EOS 11-14-2023
