A Louisiana man accused of using fraudulent checks to buy livestock and agricultural equipment in six states is facing charges in Mississippi after being spotted at an auction in Carthage. The Mississippi Agriculture and Livestock Theft Bureau had gotten a tip that Johnny Payne was at the auction but before investigators arrived, he fled toward Rankin County where he was arrested by sheriff’s deputies. When he was pulled over, Payne was hauling a stock trailer that authorities in North Carolina say he bought in that state with a phony check.
