Has Flu Season Peaked in MS?

If your town is like most in Mississippi, it may seem like just about everybody there has been sick.  A lot of viruses are going around.  But a State Health Department update suggests that our flu rate may have peaked.  There’s no way to be sure until we see a couple more weeks of data, but the latest numbers for the week ending Jan. 4 showed that 84 doctors’ offices across Mississippi reported under 900 patients with symptoms of the flu, the fewest since early December. That translates into a statewide flu rate of 6.2 per cent, down from 7.8 per cent the previous week.  And that drops us a couple of notches on the CDC’s flu map, down to the fourth-highest level after being at Level 2 the week before.

The public health district which includes Leake and Neshoba counties saw a slight increase in its flu rate, to just over 8 per cent.  And while the flu rate in the district which includes Attala and Holmes counties was down substantially in the latest report, it’s still the highest in the state at almost 19 per cent.
