A home on Hwy 43 S near Johnny’s Used Cars may have suffered a lightning strike this morning.
The Attala County Fire Department was called to the home just before 10 a.m. when the homeowner reported they heard what sounded like an explosion and then the home filled with smoke.
Attala County Fire Chief Tim Cox says he believes a lightning strike traveled down the vent pipe of the water heater and exited through the copper supply line causing water to flood a room in the home. This would explain the explosion-like sound and the smoke.
A fallen utility line was also found across the yard and over a camper in the driveway of the residence.

July 29, 2024 at 4:41 PMThis is our home. I called 911 after the loud boom, smoke and smoke alarm screaming. I would like to give my sincere thanks to the 911 dispatcher who walked me through this, the firemen, Central Electric Company employees, Atmos Gas employees, and anyone else who was involved in situation at our house last week. Everyone was so kind and considerate. Some even helped me with my “4” four legged babies. We have some awesome people working here. Thank you all so much. God was truly watching over us.
