A local athlete has been selected to play in the Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase hosted by the Atlanta Braves June 21 – June 22
Sanjiya Hickman from Nanih Waiya Attendance Center will be one of 50 players of Native American descent featured in the showcase. Hickman is the only player from Mississippi named to the showcase and will represent the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
The Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase highlights Native American high school baseball players who aspire to play the game at the next level. As part of the Braves’ efforts to provide access and opportunity for diverse baseball talent, athletes will gain elite baseball development training with former MLB players and the chance to play in front of college and Major League scouts on a big-league stage, offering exposure for players who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to at this level.
As part of the two-day 2025 Native American All-Star Baseball Showcase, selected athletes will first compete in a pro-style workout on Saturday, June 21. Executed by Marquis Grissom Baseball Association, the workout will focus on defensive work, fielding, throwing, and catcher pop times. Four to six players will be selected during Saturday’s batting practice to then participate in a Home Run Derby that same afternoon.
On Sunday, June 22, all athletes will be divided into two teams for the showcase game, with former Major League Baseball players as coaches for each respective team. As in years past, the Atlanta Braves will continue to utilize TrackMan Baseball, a leading technology company in sports analytics, for the showcase to capture, track, and deliver player statistics to help players improve their overall game.
Players and families will also hear from Atlanta Braves Southern Regional Scouting Supervisor Travis Coleman, Savannah State University Head Baseball Coach Tino Burgos, and Braves Alumni Julio Franco through a panel. Native American mentors in attendance will have the opportunity to also connect with them in a small group setting.
