MDOT makes progress on bridge project in Carroll County

BATESVILLE, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced several construction and maintenance project updates in north Mississippi.

U.S. 51 bridge replacement in Carroll County

Progress is being made on a project to replace six bridges along U.S. 51 in Carroll County.

Two of the concrete bridge decks have been completed, and construction is underway on the other bridges. Roadway embankment is approximately 90% complete.

The $15.9 million project was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2026.

Bridge replacements on State Route 9 in Calhoun County

Work is progressing on the replacement of four bridges on State Route 9 south of Calhoun City in Calhoun County.

At Site 1, the contractor has finished constructing two box culverts, one bridge deck and the roadway embankment, and crews will soon place asphalt. At Site 2, The contractor has finished bridge deck construction, is approximately 80% complete with the embankment and has begun placing the underdrains at the bridge abutments. Earthwork operations will resume as soon as weather permits for both sites.

The $24 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Little Rock, Ark., and work is expected to be complete in fall 2025.

Roundabout construction on U.S. 51 at Main St. in Senatobia

Work is nearly complete on a new roundabout at U.S. 51 and Main St. in Tate County.

The contractor plans to install signs, sod, surface asphalt and thermoplastic stripe early June. The roundabout was opened to traffic on June 13.

The $2.9 million contract was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford. Work is expected to be complete in summer 2025.

U.S. 51 bridge replacement in Yalobusha County

Construction continues on the replacement of four bridges along U.S. 51 in Yalobusha County.

Both detour bridges for Sites 1 and Site 2 have been completed alongside earthwork operations. The contractor is currently paving detour roads for both sites and will swap traffic once all paving and delineation devices are in place. Soil operations for Site 4 will start once site conditions allow for the placement of borrow.

This $20.1 million project was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. of Nesbit. Construction will be completed by summer 2026.

U.S. 51 bridge replacement over the Yocona River in Yalobusha County

Work continues on the replacement of the U.S. 51 bridge over Yocona River in Yalobusha County.

All drill shaft supports have been poured along with the bridge caps for each bent. Prestressed beams have been set for the center span of the new bridge, and the contractor is now forming and pouring center span diaphragms. Removal of north and south work platforms are complete, allowing for the placement of beams for the remaining spans. Once all beams have been set, the contractor can begin preparing for the placement of bridge deck concrete.

The contractor has also completed construction of the box culvert north of the river. The upstream and downstream ends of the box have been reinforced with riprap. Soil operations have been delayed but will resume in full force once soil conditions improve.

Century Construction of Tupelo was awarded the $12.2 million contract. It is anticipated that work will be complete by spring 2026.

U.S. 51/Turman Dr. intersection improvements in DeSoto County

Work is wrapping up on intersection improvements at U.S. 51 and Turman Dr. in Horn Lake.

All pavement is complete, and traffic signals are operational. Only installation of ditch riprap for drainage remains.

The $1.2 million contract was awarded to J.M. Duncan, Inc. of Ripley. Work is expected to be complete in June 2025.

Roundabout Construction at State Route 7 and University Avenue in Oxford

A project is underway to construct new roundabouts at the State Route 7 ramps and University Ave. in Oxford.

All four interchange ramps will remain open during construction. Traffic will use the outside lanes with the traffic circles operational. Work is isolated to the center of the road, as the contractor installs curb and gutter as well as all the interior island pavement.

The $4.9 million contract was awarded to Cook & Son, LLC of Smithville. Work is expected to be complete in spring 2026.

U.S. 278/State Route 6 mill and overlay in Panola County

A project to mill and overlay approximately 14 miles of U.S. 278 is underway in Panola County.

Milling and paving operations are almost complete in the eastbound lanes. Repair of failed areas in the roadway is complete in both eastbound and westbound lanes, with the only repair work remaining in the city of Batesville. Random clearing and mulching operations are ongoing in the westbound lanes to remove trees encroaching the highway. Milling and paving operations will begin in the westbound lanes once the clearing and mulching operation is complete.

The $13.6 million project was awarded to Lehman-Roberts Company of Memphis, Tenn., and is expected to be completed this summer.
