MDOT projects in Attala and other counties nearing completion

BATESVILLE, MISS. – The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced several construction and maintenance project updates in north Mississippi.

“These projects are vital to our communities in northwest Mississippi, and they wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous level of support we receive from our state legislature and executive branch,” said Mitch Turner, District 2 Engineer.

Bridge replacement on State Route 35 in Attala County

A project to replace a bridge on State Route 35 just north of Kosciusko in Attala County is nearing completion. Traffic has been swapped onto the new roadway. The contractor is removing the detour road and placing the remaining headwall for the box culvert.

The $6.5 million contract was awarded to Joe McGee Construction Company, Inc. of Lake, and the project is expected to be completed in fall 2024.

Bridge replacement completed on State Route 35 in Carroll County

A project to replace a bridge on State Route 35 over Big Sand Creek in Carroll County is complete with the exception of establishing grass on site.

The $6.5 million project was awarded to Century Construction Group of Tupelo.

Bridge replacements on State Route 9 in Calhoun County

Work is progressing on the replacement of four bridges on State Route 9 south of Calhoun City in Calhoun County. At Site 1, the contractor has finished constructing two box culverts and one bridge deck. At Site 2, the contractor has finished placing the girders for all three bridges. Earthwork operations are anticipated to resume in the near future for both sites.

The $24 million contract was awarded to Manhattan Road & Bridge Company of Little Rock, Ark., and work is expected to be completed in summer 2025.

Bridge replacements on State Route 8 in Calhoun and Grenada counties

A project to construct six bridges on State Route 8 is underway in Calhoun and Grenada counties.

In Grenada County, traffic has been swapped onto the newly constructed roadway. Only the final asphalt lift remains. In Calhoun County, traffic has been swapped onto the newly constructed realignment. The contractor is in the process of removing the old highway and bridges.

The $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace Construction, Inc. of Columbia and is expected to be completed in fall 2024.

Bridge replacements on State Route 442 in Leflore County

Work is progressing on the replacement of five bridges on State Route 442 in Leflore County.

Sites 1, 2, 4 and 5 are paved except for the surface layer and are open to traffic. The contractor moved operations to Site 3 and is currently working on the new bridge.

The $12.4 million contract was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. of Nesbit. Construction is expected to be completed in spring 2025.

Bridge replacements on State Route 6 in Quitman County

A project to replace two bridges on State Route 6 in Marks is nearing completion. The two bridges are over Cassidy Bayou and Coldwater River. Construction is complete on both bridges.  Permanent stripe is currently being installed.

W.G. Yates and Sons Construction Company of Jackson was awarded the $29.8 million contract. Construction is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

Bridge replacements on State Route 3 in Tate and Tunica counties

Work is progressing on two bridge replacements on State Route 3 in Tate and Tunica counties. The bridges are being built over the CNIC Railroad and the Coldwater River near Savage. They are being constructed on a new alignment, adjacent to the existing road.

Traffic has been moved onto the new alignment and bridges. The contractor is removing the old river bridge and connecting the local roads to the new alignment.

The $25.5 million project was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co. Inc. Work is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

Intersection improvements on U.S. 61 in Tunica County

A $3.6 million project to install a directional median and make intersection improvements is nearing completion in Tunica County.

Remaining work includes installing raised pavement markers and a small amount of detail stripe.

The contract was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. of Waterford. Work is expected to be completed in fall  2024.

Roundabout construction on U.S. 51 at Main Street in Senatobia

Work is progressing on a new roundabout in Tate County. Installation of the new storm drainpipes and inlets is complete. Construction of the new roundabout is underway. The intersection was closed in July to complete the work.

The $2.9 million contract was awarded to Ste-Bil Grading Inc. Work is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

U.S. 51 bridge replacement in Yalobusha County

A project to replace four bridges along U.S. 51 is underway in Yalobusha County. The Contractor has driven all test piles and is installing the detour bridge on Site A and constructing the detour road on Site B.

The $20.1 project was awarded to Talbot Brothers Contracting Co., Inc. of Nesbit. Construction is expected to be complete in summer 2026.

U.S. 51 bridge replacement over the Yocona River in Yalobusha County

Work has started on the replacement of a bridge on U.S. 51 over the Yocona River in Yalabousha County. Clearing operations are nearly complete, and the contractor has started dirt work for the project. Work has started on the box culvert, and removal of the existing bridge has begun.

Century Construction has been awarded the $12.2 million contract. It is anticipated that work will be complete by spring 2026.

U.S. 51/Turman intersection improvements in DeSoto County

Work has started on an intersection improvement project at U.S. 51 and Turman in Southaven.

The $1.2 million contract was awarded to J.M. Duncan, Inc. of Ripley.  Work is expected to be complete in spring 2025.

Roundabout construction at State Route 7 and University Avenue in Lafayette County

A project to construct roundabouts at the State Route 7 ramps and University Ave. in Oxford is ready to begin. Construction signs have been placed.

The $4.9 million contract was awarded to Cook & Son, LLC. of Smithville. Work is expected to be completed in summer 2026.
