A study of the way we talk has turned up some interesting results. An online language learning marketplace called Preply analyzed more than half a million social media posts reacting to 165 different American accents and came up with the one considered the most appealing.
“The Mississippi accent took first place,” says Sylvia Johnson, the company’s head of learning design. “It’s quite melodic, it’s quite rhythmic. I would say the Mississippi accent has quite a musical quality.”
And Johnson says the Mississippi accent, for some people at least, evokes a positive feeling. “The warm and welcoming culture it symbolizes.”
Wyoming’s accent was ranked the second-most appealing, followed by Cajun, Hawaiian and Texan.
