The pastor and members of Goodway Missionary Baptist Church on Atkins Street are speaking out after a weekend shooting left damage from about a dozen bullets.

“Well, as you see, some of the bullet holes went in our church, up the church and up through the ceiling,” says Pastor Willie C. Rush.

Rush says this has been an ongoing issue in the area for many years.

“We are just concerned citizens trying to get a handle on this situation that has been happening for like 20-plus years and we want things to change,” says Pastor Rush.

The pastor says no one was in the church when the shooting happened, but the children’s ministry often has weekend sleepovers in the sanctuary.

“Bullets don’t have eyes. We love our children here at the church, and not only in the church but in our community, and so we don’t want anyone to get hurt,” he said.

Pastor Rush and members of the church are calling for the city to do something about the shooting that they believe was done by people living in the area.

Mayor James Young says he fully supports the church.

“It is a scar on the community. My community. You have bullet holes in the church. You have bullet holes in the van. Unacceptable. Totally unacceptable,” says Young.

He says law enforcement is doing all it can to prevent this from happening again, including adding more patrols in the area.

“We want to stop it by whatever means that are legal and respectable,” says Young.

The mayor says the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Rush says the church has been in contact with law enforcement. He hopes something good will come from this.

If you have any information on the shooting contact the Philadelphia Police Department.
