Kosciusko, MS – Mr. Billy P. Barnett, a 100-year-old World War II veteran, has been named “Resident of the Month” at the Martha Jo Leslie State Veterans Home in Kosciusko.
A native of Carthage, Barnett served in the U.S. Army, enlisting Jan. 14, 1944.
He trained at Fort McClellan, Alabama, with Company F, 23rd Infantry Rifleman, and participated in the Western European Campaign, landing on Omaha Beach in August 1944 as part of an Allied mission during World War II.
His service earned him the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, and Overseas Bar.
After the war, Barnett opened Barnett’s Auto Sales in Carthage, where he worked until his retirement in 1995. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys hunting and fishing.
