It was seven years ago today that a military transport plane known as YANKY 72 crashed near Itta Bena killing 15 Marines and a Navy corpsman….

“It feels like it was yesterday.   It’s crazy to think that so much time has passed. But the memory has definitely stayed alive in the Delta, throughout Mississippi, throughout these past seven years.”

That’s Kelsey McCarty with the YANKY 72 Memorial Committee which will commemorate the loss of those military personnel with a ceremony Saturday morning at 10…

“We have about five or six of the 16 families that will be returning.  They’ve really formed a connection, a bond, with the community around, especially the first responders.  And they come back because it helps keep the memory alive.”

The public is invited to the ceremony at the YANKY 72 memorial across the highway from Mississippi Valley State University.

Last week, federal prosecutors in Mississippi announced criminal charges against a former Air Force engineer accused of obstructing the crash investigation by lying to federal agents and concealing documents.
