WASHINGTON–Congressman Bennie Thompson, who represents the Delta, along with Attala and Leake counties, in Washington, received a pardon for his work on the Jan. 6 Committee, Monday from former Pres. Joe Biden., as Biden was preparing to depart the White House and hand the presidency over to Donald Trump.
Thompson was pardoned along with other members of that committee, Dr. Anthony Fauci and retired Gen. Mark Milley, Biden said, as a protection against possible revenge by Mr. Trump.
During a post-inauguration speech Trump referred to the members of the committee as political thugs, accusing them of deleting important audio and video evidence they reviewed as part of the committee, a matter which has been credibly explored.
“The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing, nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense,” said Biden, in a prepared statement. “Our nation owes these public servants a debt of gratitude for their tireless commitment to our country.”
Thompson responded to the pardons in a joint statement with other members of the committee.
“These are indeed ‘extraordinary circumstances’ when public servants are pardoned to prevent false prosecution by the government for having worked faithfully as Members of Congress to expose the facts of a months-long criminal effort to override the will of the voters after the 2020 elections,” he said, adding that some members of the committee had been subject to harassment and threats.
Thompson again indicated that he believes national institutions are in jeopardy by the presence of Trump in the White House, ending his statement by saying “the truth and the Constitution must prevail”.
