Update: The Kosciusko Board of Aldermen approved the municipal court surcharge ordinance during Tuesday night’s meeting.

The ordinance adds a $20 processing fee for any cases that are tried through City of Kosciusko Municipal Court.

Funds raised from the additional fee would be used for updating equipment for the police department.

As with all city ordinances, it will take effect 30 days after it’s passed.

March 19: The City of Kosciusko wants to tack on an extra $20 to what it collects on cases in municipal court.  And that money would be used for information technology for the police department…

“This would actually go to helping with, like, bodycams, anything that would go in those (police) cars as far as the computers– the cameras and stuff that we have around the community, which have helped to solve a tremendous amount of crime.”

Mayor Tim Kyle says the court doesn’t generate much money for the city.

“When you pay a fine on anything, it goes mostly to the state.”

The Board of Aldermen is considering an ordinance that would impose the $20 surcharge on all court cases, except those that are dismissed or where court costs are waived.

And there’s a new ordinance now dealing with residential fences in Kosciusko.

“You know, (it’s) just about the way fences are built and the construction of those.  And the height limits and how close they can be to streets and things like that.”

The aldermen passed that ordinance Tuesday night.
