A Kosciusko Whippets baseball player took to the mound this weekend to throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
Whippet senior Bailey Powers threw the first pitch prior to the March 15 game between Arkansas and Ole Miss in Oxford.
With Farm Bureau being the weekend’s sponsor for the Arkansas-Ole Miss series, Agent Johnathan Powers, Bailey’s father, had the opportunity to throw out the first pitch, but said he wanted to pass that opportunity on to his son.
“I thought it would be an awesome memory for Bailey, that actually pitches, to get to feel what it was like to stand in front of 10 thousand people,” said Johnathan. “Coach [Mike] Bianco was very adamant about throwing it low. He said ‘I’ll have real catchers so throw it low, they will block it up or I’ll bench them.’ So Bailey threw it low as requested.”
Powers plays first base and pitches for the Kosciusko Whippets’ baseball team. He’s one of the team leaders in strikeouts and innings pitched.
Powers and the Whippets will play two home games this week, Tuesday against Eupora and Friday against No. 3 Jackson Prep.
