Whippets get a walk-off win to remain alive in playoffs (video)

After a disappointing loss to Pontotoc in the first game of the second best-of-three series in the high school baseball playoffs, the Whippets played at home on Saturday to war with the Warriors in an ultimate do-or-die match.

They got off to a good start with a 3-0 lead after the first inning.  But, slowly and surely, the Pontotoc Warriors closed the gap and eventually pulled ahead in the fifth inning.  Just as many fans were beginning to despair and believe their Whippets had run out of gas, the home team rallied and scored two in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 7-6 going into the seventh.

Tension could not have been higher when the Warriors tied it up in the seventh.  But, facing the sudden end of their successful season, the Whippets loaded the bases and brought one home for the win.  Final score:  8-7.

Brandon Black and John Deason were both named Autumn Ridge Players of the Game.

Game three is scheduled for this afternoon (Monday) in Pontotoc. That game can be heard on Breezy101, Breezynews.com, and the Breezy 101 app.
