The Mississippi State Department of Health’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) will continue full operations through the end of February even without congressional action on the current government shutdown.
The additional funding is from federal partners at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agency funding the WIC program.
The Mississippi WIC Program provides services to more than 95,000 clients each month as a supplemental nutrition program for pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women, infants and children under five years of age.
The Mississippi WIC Program operates and maintains 95 distribution sites serving clients statewide.
“Through the USDA’s flexibility with funding, our services to pregnant women and children will not be interrupted at this time, and for that we are grateful,” said Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs.
“Of course we will continue to monitor the situation and make plans for further delays in funding if necessary,” said Dobbs.
