Winston County native hired as University of Houston women’s basketball coach

Winston County native Matthew Mitchell has been announced as the new head women’s basketball coach at the University of Houston.

The school made the announcement Thursday morning through a press release shared across its social media channels.

Mitchell, a 1995 graduate of Mississippi State university, got his first coaching experience at Winston Academy. His first head coaching job was at Central Holmes Christian School in Lexington.

He began his college coaching career at the University of Tennessee, under the tutelage of legendary coach Pat Summitt.

His first college head coaching job came in 2005 at Morehead State, where he coached through 2007.

In 2007, Mitchell was hired as the head women’s coach at the University of Kentucky. He coached there through 2020, earning SEC Coach of the Year honors twice.
