Breck Riley Radio Personality of the Year MAB Entry
There are not many people on the radio in Mississippi, or anywhere for that matter, that embody the radio personality better than Breck Riley.
Breck has been the morning drive host on Breezy 101 – WLIN-FM (AC format) for seven years. The show airs weekday mornings from 6:00 – 9:00 am and is called “The BreckFast Show.”
As it did for everyone in Mississippi, 2021 began frigidly for Breck. The major ice storm that plagued and basically shut down the state for 5 days couldn’t keep Breck from going on the air.
Breck moved into the radio station for the entire week, sleeping on the floor of his studio (see pictures) so he could give around the clock coverage of school closings, power outages, and other important information.
During the historic Mississippi State baseball college world series run, Breck reached out to several former MS State baseball players from the area to have on The BreckFast Show. Former Bulldog and College World Series participant Barry Patton called into the show from Omaha to provide an update. The morning following the Bulldogs’ winning the championship, former players Tim and Terry Fancher were live in the studio to discuss their time as Bulldogs and what the championship meant to the program.
Breck also works closely with local schools to highlight and recognize students and athletes. He went above and beyond this year to by surprising a third grade reading class in their virtual Google Classroom while he was live on the air. He also visited a local elementary school to read to students as a part of Dr. Seuss week. Coaches and players from the Kosciusko Whippet softball team visited The BreckFast Show days after the team won the state championship, which Breck also provided play-by-play commentary for.
In addition to his morning show work, Breck serves as news director, sports play-by-play commentator and video producer for Kosciusko Whippet football broadcasts on Breezy 101/YouTube, and manages the BreezyNews.com webpage and social media accounts.
This year, Breck also took over as the football play-by-play voice for the Holmes Community College football radio network.
Guests appearing on the radio with Breck this year were:
- Brandon Presley – Mississippi Public Service Commissioner (Northern District)
- Jason White – Speaker PRO Temp of MS House of Representatives
- Tim Kyle – Mayor of Kosciusko
- Chris Wray – Kosciusko Chief of Police
