The tension was at its height in Columbus as the Kosciusko Whippets traveled to New Hope Thursday evening to fight the Trojans for the lead in the region.  After a disappointing loss to New Hope on Wednesday, it was all on the line.  Before yesterday, the two teams were tied for first in Region 4-4A.  Losing by four runs on Wednesday, the Whippets needed to beat the Trojans by five on Thursday to clinch the district title.

In football, they call it a shootout.  In the first, Kosciusko loaded the bases but were left there.  They, in turn, shut the Trojans’ half of the inning down quickly.  In the second, both teams put two runs on the board.  After this exciting start, it was a fierce back and forth, with both teams making spectacular plays.  Kosciusko was up by three.  But then New Hope put four on the board in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead.  The hometown boys tied it up in the top of the sixth and held the Trojans scoreless for the inning.

It doesn’t get much more exciting in high school baseball than going into the seventh inning with a tie score and the district title on the line.  And with no score in the seventh, the game went into extra innings.  No score in the eighth.  The Whippets put four on the board in the top of the ninth.  The Trojans were scoreless in the ninth.  So the Whippets win the game 10-6 and are tied for first place in Region 4-4A.

Congratulations to senior Micah Parker for being named the Autumn Ridge Dental Player of the Game, pitching five innings and having four base hits.

All Kosciusko Whippets playoff games will be broadcast, audio-only, and will be available on breezynews.com and the BreezyNews app.
