The National Weather Service is upgrading the wildfire danger in parts of the local area because breezy conditions will combine with the warm temperatures, dry vegetation and lower humidity to increase the risk of fires. There’s now an “elevated” threat of wildfires across most of Holmes County, much of Leake County and the southwestern corner of Attala County. The rest of the area remains under a “limited” threat. The Mississippi Forestry Commission announced last week that, for the first time, it’s called in assistance from other states to help fight the wildfires that break out. More than 14,000 acres have burned in Mississippi since August 1.
