A big spotlight will soon be shining on the life and legacy of Kosciusko folk artist L.V. Hull when a major exhibition of her work opens at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson next spring. One of the co-curators of that exhibition is Yaphet Smith who is helping to develop the L.V Hull Legacy Center in Kosciusko and have it ready to open to the public in March, coinciding with the exhibition in Jackson. And he’s hoping that, together, the two opportunities to learn more about Hull will help to earn her broader appreciation…
“I do think that this will introduce entire new audiences and new generations to L.V., not just in Mississippi but across the U-S and the world…”
And Smith says those who visit the Museum of Art exhibition will be encouraged to get the full story in Kosciusko…
“We really hope that folks will visit Jackson and then make the trip to Kosciusko to learn even more about L.V….”
And he’s hoping it brings a significant number of visitors to the city….
“You know, folks come up to see the Legacy Center and L.V.’s home and then perhaps take in more of what Kosciusko has to offer…”
Smith has produced a documentary about Hull which shares the same name as the art exhibition—”Love is a Sensation.” The film will premiere in March in both Jackson and Kosciusko.
And, a fundraising drive is getting underway for the matching funds which are needed for the Arts Foundation of Kosciusko’s $415K grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission to complete the final renovations at the Legacy Center. Smith says they need $277K and donations may be made online at “lvhull.org” or checks can be dropped off at the Kosciusko Attala Partnership office.
