Kosciusko High School’s Hayes Tyler captured a state title Wednesday, winning the MHSAA Class 4A Boys Singles State Championship in Vicksburg.
Tyler defeated Tyson Alford of Houston High School in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to secure the championship.
The title match was part of the individual finals of the MHSAA Individual Tennis Championships, which were held Wednesday as the culmination of the state tournament schedule.
Tyler came out strong in the opening set, dominating play and winning 6-0 before facing a tougher challenge in the second set. After a competitive back-and-forth stretch, Tyler closed out the match with a 6-4 win to seal the state title.
The championship marks a major milestone for the Kosciusko tennis program and caps off an outstanding season for Tyler, who has been a consistent force in singles competition throughout the year, remaining unbeaten through regional and playoff competition leading into the state tournament.
With the victory, Tyler earns the distinction of Class 4A Boys Singles State Champion, bringing home a state championship to Kosciusko.
