Residents in Attala County and several surrounding North Mississippi counties are now eligible for expanded federal disaster assistance following the severe winter storm that impacted the region from January 23–27, 2026.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that President Donald J. Trump has authorized additional individual assistance for affected areas, broadening support beyond earlier public assistance designations.
For Central Mississippi, the expansion is especially significant for residents of Attala County, as well as nearby counties including Holmes County and Carroll County, all of which were impacted by storm-related damage ranging from power outages to property losses.
Under the new declaration, eligible residents may receive federal grants for temporary housing, home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans may also be available to help cover uninsured losses not addressed by insurance providers.
Officials noted that the expanded aid is designed to help individuals and families recover more directly, rather than focusing solely on infrastructure-level assistance that was previously approved.
Residents in Attala County and surrounding communities are encouraged to first file claims with their insurance companies. After that, they can apply for FEMA assistance online at DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 1-800-621-3362, or through the FEMA mobile app. Those using relay services should provide the appropriate contact information when applying.
The expansion is expected to bring additional recovery support to communities across central and north Mississippi still working to repair storm damage and restore normal conditions.
