While much of the local area will avoid the worst of the hot temperatures and humidity today, a heat advisory has been posted for Holmes, Carroll and Montgomery counties. With this afternoon’s high in Durant forecast to be in the upper 90s, the heat index there could reach 109. The National Weather Service says somewhat drier air that’s not as hot could be oozing into Mississippi this week keeping the heat stress focus on the western part of the state. And by Wednesday, the entire area may be out from under a heat advisory although temperatures will continue running above normal.
