The continued growth of the Kosciusko Farmers Market has city and county leaders exploring ways to improve parking and accommodate more visitors.
During Tuesday night’s Board of Aldermen meeting, Farmers Market Manager Mary Williams updated city officials on the success of the market while raising concerns about limited parking.
Mayor Tim Kyle said the market is at full capacity with vendors, but the increasing number of shoppers has created traffic concerns.
“They’re excited about the growth they do have,” Kyle said. “The facility is full, but they’re having a problem with parking.”
According to Kyle, some visitors have begun parking along Highway 12 near the market entrance, creating potential safety hazards.
City officials discussed possible long-term solutions, including applying for a grant to get funding to expand the facility and add additional parking.
The Farmers Market has operated at its current location for approximately 16 years. Kyle said it was originally constructed through a Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Healthy Mississippi grant and sits on county-owned property, making it a joint city-county effort.
“It is a good thing to have in our community,” Kyle said. “It’s a great venue where people can get fresh produce.”
