Despite an active burn ban, Attala County firefighters continue responding to fires across the county. According to Attala County Fire Chief Tim Cox, crews have responded to several fires lately.
Firefighters battled multiple grass fires on HWY 35 N, woods fires on Attala Roads 1116 and 2135, and a fire on Attala Rd. 4106 that involved woods, a structure, and a vehicle. Fortunately, the home was unoccupied and no injuries were reported. One of the HWY 35 N fires also involved a downed power line.
Chief Cox says fire suppression charges are pending. Anyone responsible for starting a fire during the burn ban could face charges of $350 per hour for resources used to extinguish it.
The burn ban remains in effect, and residents are urged to take it seriously. Do not burn. The risk to lives, homes, and property is simply too great.
