Residents and business owners in Attala County are encouraged to review newly updated flood maps released by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), as a 90-day appeal and comment period officially began Feb. 12, 2026.
The proposed Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) reflects updated data and changes to local flood risk areas across the county. Officials say the new maps provide more accurate information to help residents, businesses, and local leaders make informed decisions about flood protection, development planning, and flood insurance coverage.
The mapping project is part of a nationwide effort led by FEMA to improve flood risk awareness and strengthen community preparedness. In Mississippi, the project is being led by the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) in partnership with FEMA Region IV and local community officials.
Before the maps are finalized, residents and business owners can submit comments or file appeals if they believe the information is incorrect or incomplete.
Community members who notice non-technical errors — such as misspelled road names or incorrect boundaries — may submit written corrections. Those with technical or scientific data, including engineering or hydrologic studies, may file a formal appeal during the 90-day review period.
All appeals and comments must be submitted through local officials, not directly to FEMA. Officials recommend that anyone considering an appeal contact their local floodplain administrator or emergency management office for guidance on the process.
Once finalized, the updated flood maps are expected to become effective in early 2027, which may result in new flood insurance requirements for some properties.
