As the regular season wraps up this week, the Kosciusko Whippets have their eyes set on the Class 4A state playoffs.
Kosciusko finishes out the regular season with a non-district matchup against Elzy this Friday, meaning their work in Region 4-4A is already complete.
Now, the Whippets simply wait on this week’s division results to officially lock in their seeding, hosting duties, and opening-round opponent.
Kosciusko’s path in Region 4-4A is straightforward entering Friday night.
A Louisville victory over Greenwood secures the No. 2 seed for the Whippets.
Should Greenwood pull off an upset over Louisville by 12 points or more, it would trigger a three-way tiebreaker using point differential to sort out the top three spots among Louisville, Kosciusko, and Greenwood. Meanwhile, the winner of Thursday’s Yazoo City and Gentry contest will round out the region as the No. 4 seed.
With Louisville a heavy favorite over Greenwood, the Whippets are in prime position to bring playoff football home to Landrum Field for the opening round, as the top two seeds from each region host.
Crossing over in Round 1, Region 4-4A will match up against Region 2-4A.
Shannon has already clinched the No. 1 seed in Region 2, while Houston has locked up No. 2. That leaves Kosciusko’s potential first-round opponent coming directly down to Thursday night’s clash between Amory and Itawamba Agricultural High School.
The winner of the Amory-IAHS matchup will secure the No. 3 seed in Region 2 and travel to face Kosciusko, while the loser will take the No. 4 seed and travel to the Region 4 champion.
-
Best-Case / Most Likely Scenario: Louisville beats Greenwood, locking Kosciusko into the No. 2 seed to host the winner of Amory vs. Itawamba Agricultural at Landrum Field in Round 1.
-
Wild Card Math: A multi-score Greenwood win over Louisville could alter the top three seeds via point differential.
