The Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System is inviting residents across its five-county service area—including Attala County—to help preserve a snapshot of life in central Mississippi for future generations through a new community time capsule project based in Kosciusko.
The initiative, titled “Voices of Mid-Mississippi: A Community Time Capsule,” is part of the statewide America250 Mississippi effort. It will collect handwritten notes and select small items that reflect what life is like in the region today, with the goal of preserving them until the year 2076, when they will be opened during the America 300 celebration.
The capsule will be permanently housed at the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System headquarters at the Attala County Library in Kosciusko.
Organizers are asking the public to contribute handwritten responses to prompts such as what America means in the context of local history, and how the library has influenced personal learning, growth, and community connection. In addition to written submissions, the project will include items like library bookmarks, photographs of area towns, and messages from community leaders.
Library officials say the goal is to create a meaningful historical record of everyday life in Mid-Mississippi—capturing voices, perspectives, and experiences that might otherwise be lost over time.
Community members have until June 30, 2026, to submit items for inclusion.
A closing ceremony marking the end of the collection period is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2026.
Once sealed, the time capsule will remain preserved in Kosciusko for 50 years before being opened by future generations in 2076.
