Several Ethel athletes qualify for State Track Meet

Several athletes from Ethel High School have qualified for the upcoming MHSAA State Track and Field Meet after strong performances at region and South State competitions.

Leading the group is Claire Tate, who captured championships at the Region, Super Region, and South State meets in the 100-meter hurdles, earning her spot as one of the top contenders heading into the state finals.

Addy Newman also punched her ticket to state competition, finishing as the South State runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the field events, Alyn Bishop claimed the Super Region championship and finished as South State runner-up in the shot put. Bishop also qualified to compete in the discus at the state meet.

Distance runner Jasmine Williamson earned her state berth after winning the Region championship and finishing as South State runner-up in the 1600-meter run.

Sprinter Amariuna Merritt qualified for state in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. Merritt brings significant state experience, having finished third in the state in the 100-meter dash two years ago, and this marks her third consecutive year competing at the state level.

The athletes will now represent Ethel High School at the MHSAA State Track and Field Championships.

Due to weather impacting the state this week, the championship schedule has been adjusted.

Ethel’s classification (1A)  is now scheduled for Monday, May 4, at Pearl High School.

The revised championship schedule is as follows:

  • May 2: Classes 5A, 6A, and 7A
  • May 4: Classes 1A and 3A
  • May 5: Classes 2A and 4A
