The National Weather Service says triple digit temperatures will be common across central Mississippi this weekend and early next week. Some afternoon highs may break records. And we could also see some record-warm low temperatures as we get little relief when the sun goes down.
Highs near 100 are forecast today in Carthage, Philadelphia and Durant with upper 90s in Kosciusko. Durant could reach 101 on Sunday with Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia at 100. Monday could be the hottest day in Durant with a high of 103 with Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia at 101.
The heat index is expected to reach 107 in Durant today and 105 in Kosciusko. On Sunday, heat indices will range from 108 in Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia to 110 in Durant. Monday, the heat index could creep higher, to 109 in Kosciusko, Carthage and Philadelphia while again forecast to reach 110 in Durant.
A heat advisory will be in effect through Monday. An extreme heat warning now covers most of north Mississippi and some counties in south Mississippi.
