Dr. Brian Hurley of the University of Arkansas is passing through Kosciusko today on his 260-mile walk along the Natchez Trace Parkway for research for his upcoming book.
Dr. Hurley’s project is based on his dissertation about long-distance walking in American history, and he says he chose the Natchez Trace because of its historical significance and continued use through generations by American Indians, flatboatmen, enslaved people, and others.
By day three of his journey, Hurley had completed 100 miles of the trail. He began in Tupelo and is traveling solo toward Natchez. He says he’s carrying only essential supplies with plans to finish the trip by next Saturday.
Dr. Hurley said he has been impressed by the preservation of the Trace, the natural beauty of it, and the pride local communities take in the area’s rich history.
